Imo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Taiwo Lakanu
The Owerri Urban Police Division in Imo State has arrested a three-man robbery gang, who usually drugged their victims before disposing them of their properties.
The Divisional Police Officer in-charge, Mrs. Mary Obasi, who disclosed this, said the suspects were facing trial.
The DPO made the disclosure when the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fredrick Taiwo Lakanu visited the division. She also said convictions had been recorded and convicts were serving various jail terms.
“Great number of hardened criminals was transferred to State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department and teams in the state headquarters for consolidated investigation,” Obasi said.
She described the Owerri Urban as a crime-prone area due to its strategic position in the state.
Obasi, however, said the crime rate in the area had reduced as a result of strategies like visibility policing, vehicular and foot patrol of flash points, stop and search and constant raid of criminal hideouts adopted by the divisional officers and men.
She listed the lack of adequate patrol vehicles, manpower, communication gadgets, accommodation and arms and ammunition among others as some of the challenges the division was grappling with.
According to her, such challenges were militating against effective policing of her area of jurisdiction.
“The current workforce of the division is grossly inadequate in view of the multiplicity of beats within its area of jurisdiction. The division has two old serviceable vehicles and one of the vehicles is regularly engaged in operation show of force,” she added.
