The member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/South Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Rep. Sam Onuigbo has extended hands of love by empowering small-holder poultry farmers in his constituency.
In a ceremony at the Abia State Capital, Umuahia, on Friday February 6, 2021, the beneficiaries who were educated on how to run their poultry business were gifted with galvanized battery cages, point-of-lay birds, bags of feed, and money and each of the recipients got empowerment facilities worth upto N200,000.
Rep. Onuigbo who was represented at the event by Engineer Loveday Jack Okwuonu, in his remarks stated that the empowerment programme coming on the heels of a similar one which he carried out in November 2020, was in line with his vision of providing alternative means of livelihood for his constituents with the aim of plugging the huge employment gap evident in the country.
The lawmaker charged beneficiaries to not just receive the empowerment items and disappear, but to diligently make maximum use of them and grow their businesses from there.
Speaking earlier, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Alh. Muhammed Nanono who was represented at the event by the Ministry’s Regional Director for the South East, Mr. Felix Kehis, informed the beneficiaries that the poultry industry is overwhelmed by demands and urged them to exploit this. He commended Rep. Onuigbo for initiating and attracting such a laudable project to his constituency.
In his speech, the State Director of Agriculture, Mr Victor Ihediwa, stressed on the need to diversify the economy, and pointed out that the agro-business is a great way of not only doing this, but also ensuring food security in the country.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Love Onwualimba commended Rep. Onuigbo for his people-centered representation and promised that they will work hard to make maximum use of the opportunity offered to them.
