Strike looms as Abia Teachers Ready to down tool on Friday 27th May

The Nigerian Union of Teachers, (NUT), Abia State Wing is threatening to withdraw their services soonest should Abia State government fail to address their plights.

The union wishes to inform parents/guardians of our pupils/students and general public that due to protracted arrears of Teachers entitlements and poor conditions of service in the Public Basic and Senior Secondary Schools
in Abia state ranging from:
1) 14 months arrears of Senior Secondary School Teachers salaries (9months in 2019; 2months in 2021 and 3 months in 2022).

2) Teachers Enhanced Allowance (TEA), popularly known as TSS

3) Over the years, percentage payment to Basic School Teachers

4) Non-implementation of promotions to Primary School Teachers (5) Consistent denial of gross salaries to Secondary School Teachers but rather basic salary has been the order of the day, among other entitlement too numerous to mention.

The teachers reminded that the 14 days-ultimatum that was given to the state government which elapsed on 19th May, 2022 and extra 7-days ultimatum was given to the government which will elapse on Friday 27th May 2022.

In a notice signed by the state chairman of NUT, Comrade Kizito A Kalu and state secretary, Comrade Mrs Nnenna Okoronkwo, the teachers said they have vowed to downtool if the government is still not perturbed on our legitimate demand after the expiration of the notice.

This announcement is to put on notice to parents/guardians and general public to hold their children on check due to security challenges in the country in case this ill-treatment being meted to teachers is not addressed by 27th May 2022.

The Union wants to place on record that our demands are neither ill nor politically motivated but in a bid to save the soul of education in the state for "the working Condition of the Teachers is the Learning Condition of the Child;" so that Primary and Secondary Schools owned by Abia State Government would be better positioned to train out qualified graduate if teachers condition of service is placed on government's priority list.

Teachers are advised to awaits further updates and be mindful of channels of communications used by the Nigerian Union of Teachers at this moment of our trails for "injury to one is injury to all"

Our Friday Solemn Assembly still holds at various branch venues
