Former Assembly Speaker Engr Chinedum Orji Hails Supreme Court's Landmark Ruling on Local Government Autonomy

In a significant judicial decision, the Supreme Court has affirmed the autonomy of local governments, a ruling that has been widely celebrated across the nation. Among the notable voices applauding this decision is the former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Engr. Chinedum Orji.

In a statement released on Friday, Engr. Orji praised the Supreme Court for its landmark judgment, describing it as a "victory for democracy and grassroots governance." He emphasized that the ruling reinforces the constitutional provision that guarantees local governments the right to operate independently, free from undue interference by state governments.

"This judgment is a historic milestone for our democracy," Orji stated. "Local governments are the closest to the people and play a crucial role in delivering essential services and fostering development at the grassroots level. The Supreme Court's decision will empower these local bodies to function more effectively and respond to the needs of their communities."

The Supreme Court's decision comes after years of debate and legal battles over the extent of local government autonomy. The ruling clarifies that local governments must be allowed to manage their affairs, including financial administration and local elections, without state governments undermining their autonomy.

Orji, who served as the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly from 2019 to 2023, has long been an advocate for local government independence. He expressed hope that the ruling would lead to better governance and more rapid development in rural areas.

"This decision sets a precedent that will enhance good governance and accountability," he added. "It is a call to action for local government officials to rise to the occasion and deliver on their mandates with transparency and dedication."

The former Speaker also called on state governments to fully comply with the Supreme Court's ruling and to support local governments in achieving their developmental goals. He urged for collaboration between all levels of government to ensure that the benefits of autonomy are fully realized for the betterment of citizens.

The Supreme Court's ruling is expected to have far-reaching implications for the structure of governance in Nigeria, potentially leading to increased political and administrative stability at the local level. As the nation reacts to this landmark decision, the focus now shifts to its implementation and the positive changes it promises to bring to local governance.
