The event, which will be held at the NUT New Teachers’ House in Umuahia, carries the theme “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession” and the sub-theme “Together for Teachers, Together for Tomorrow.”
According to the programme, activities will include keynote addresses, professional development sessions, recognition of outstanding teachers and a march-past featuring representatives from all Local Government Areas in the state.
At the national level, 24 teachers from Abia will participate in the celebration at Eagles Square, Abuja. During the ceremony, Governor Alex Chioma Otti will be presented with a Golden Award of Excellence for Education and Teacher Friendliness in recognition of his policies on education, including the allocation of 20 percent of the 2025 budget to the sector and the recruitment of more than 5,300 teachers.
The Abia event will be hosted by the State Chairman of NUT, Comrade Madu Friday Chukwujekwu, with Elder Goodluck Ubochi, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, serving as Chairman of the occasion. Governor Otti is expected as the Special Guest of Honour.
In a statement issued in Umuahia, Comrade Mrs. Nnenna Okonkwo, Principal Assistant Secretary General of the union, described the celebration as an opportunity to honour teachers while drawing attention to their challenges. She reaffirmed that “the working condition of the teacher is the learning condition of the child.”
The ceremony will commence at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 5, 2025 at the Teachers’ House, Ogurube Layout, near the State House of Assembly, Umuahia.
